In a long-awaited response, ministers have endorsed the recommendation of the Airports Commission to expand Heathrow by building a third runway.

The Department for Transport said: “In a major boost for the UK economy the government today announced its support for a new runway at Heathrow – the first full-length runway in the south-east since the second world war.”

For the Reading economy, this is a welcome announcement as it will help retain the many businesses based here as a result of the town's links to Heathrow and will also increase Reading's attraction to relocating businesses.

Nigel Horton-Baker, Executive Director of Reading UK CIC, said: “Ease of access to Heathrow airport is of huge importance to international businesses based in Reading and those companies considering relocating here. Reading’s close proximity to the UK’s only global hub airport makes it a natural choice for businesses looking for connectivity into London, Europe and the World.

"As we increase our trading relations across the world, following the BREXIT decision, Heathrow’s ability to cope with increasing levels of business travel and cargo movement is ever more important.”
