Explore Reading's Hidden Places – 7-10 September 2017

Heritage Open Days is a four-day celebration of Reading's wonderful heritage. Enjoy a fantastic programme of talks, walks, tours and special openings. This year, the celebration coincides wit the first ever Reading-on-Thames festival and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Conservation Areas.

Many of Reading's historic venues will be throwing open the doors All are FREE to explore! A few examples of the over 35 events on offer:-

Find out about the Criminal Justice System of England and Wales. Take part in a mock trial, sit as a juror and decide the defendant’s guilt or innocence.

  Rising Sun Arts Centre The Rising Sun Arts Centre

A Grade II listed building originally designed and built by architect Alfred Waterhouse for his wife as a Temperance House. Delve into the Rising Sun’s history through an art exhibition of work created for and about the centre, special poetry readings and a guide to the building’s intriguing past. Cafe will be open with homemade refreshments.

Malmaison HotelMalmaison Hotel

Reputed to be the oldest railway hotel in the world, it was designed by Brunel in 1844. During WWII it was used by the Ministry of Supply and was visited by Churchill. Malmaison refurbished it in keeping  with the railway theme and re-opened it as a hotel in 2007. Arts charity Jelly will be running free drop in family activities.

The Turbine HouseExtra Twists @ The Turbine House

A special exhibition looking at the science, technology and nature of twisty turny stuff at The Turbine House on the River Kennet. 

Thursday - Sunday: 10:00 - 18:00

 

 

 Father Willis Organ Demonstrations Father Willis Organ Demonstrations

 Free talk and demonstration of the historic Father Willis Organ by members of the Berkshire  Organists' Association, followed by an opportunity for members of the public to play the  instrument. www.berkshireorganists.org.uk

 Saturday: 11:00 & 12:00
