Christmas Extravaganza To Illuminate Town Centre

RDG Xmas19 BannerChristmas thrills in Reading are set to snowball at this Saturday’s (30 November) dazzling Christmas Extravaganza.

Reading BID has organised a sleigh-full of events in the Abbey Ruins, capped with a spectacular fireworks display launched from the top of the iconic Blade building.

Visitors can float away on a storytelling river cruise from the Abbey to The Oracle, listen to a digital sound and light installation hung from the trees in Chestnut Walk and keep warm at the food stalls. A capella, blues, dance music and a schools’ choir will make up an eclectic musical line-up in the Abbey Ruins. Further acts will perform in Broad Street.

The BID’s Magical Christmas In Reading programme – officially launched with the town centre lights switch-on on November 16 - sees more than 50 performances and activities taking place around town over the festive period – many of them free.

Reading BID Manager Bobby Lonergan said: "This year, there are three real Christmas trees provided by Reading Central BID and the Abbey Quarter Business District, in partnership with Reading Borough Council, alongside a new Christmas lights display. Reading BID has provided the Christmas lights and trees for the last 14 years.

“With the biggest Christmas lights display in the South East outside London, over 50 Magical Christmas events and an advertising campaign to promote Reading as the region’s number one Christmas destination, Reading town centre is gearing up for a magical and successful Christmas season."

Events this Saturday run from noon to 6pm, with fireworks at 5.30pm. For the full programme, visit
