Background

Heritage Open Days is a national celebration of the country’s history and heritage, organised by the National Trust. Everyone takes responsibility for delivering their own event. The National Trust provide some great resources to get you started and Reading UK will help promote your event locally.

During the festival period, Friday 11 -Sunday 20 September 2020, heritage enthusiasts offer access to historic venues, put on heritage special events and raise the profile of the heritage in their local area. The only caveat is that the events must be free free to attend and that they provide the public with something that they can’t usually do. The event can be on just one day or for the whole period – whatever works best for you. The cost of running the event/opening the venue is borne by the venue/organiser.

In Reading, Reading UK publishes a map guide to all the events taking place locally and promotes the festival through PR. Event organisers also upload the information to the national Heritage Open Days website, which lists everything taking place.

Every year, Heritage Open Days has a theme. Events can link to the theme or not, as you wish. The theme for 2020 will be Hidden Nature.
