Grant Thornton

Grant Thornton talk about the strengths of the Reading economy and why they are so proud to be part of it.

GrantThornton Rogers Jim 14339 057 3Doing business internationally is in Reading business’ DNA, and Reading is home to the highest concentration of foreign owned companies in the UK – representing 30% of local employment. And with such excellent connections to the rest of the country, Europe and the world via road, rail and air, it’s no wonder why. There’s also a stable number of Berkshire firms scaling up (20% growth per year for three years), and 12 Berkshire firms were featured in the 2018 Sunday Times ‘Best Companies to Work For’ list. This is an extraordinarily successful, professional community – and we’re proud to be a part of it.

Growth and expansion is at the heart of our client’s purpose, and the heart of what we do as a firm. Our Vibrant Economy Index ranks local authorities based on various baskets - measuring prosperity, community trust and belonging, and dynamism and opportunity – amongst other things. Reading scores in the top 20% nationally in over half of these baskets, confirming what we know the area has to offer.

The Thames Valley is also widely recognised as a growing hub for tech development, with many exciting and innovative businesses investing in next generation products and services. We were delighted to see two Reading businesses make it into the Megabuyte Emerging Stars List in 2018, recognising emerging tech companies for outstanding performance. Cloud software provider for recruitment, Invenias, featured highly. Securecloud+, who specialise in securely managed ICT services within Defense and the Public Sector, also made the list and won the ‘Fastest Growing Company’ award, which Grant Thornton sponsored.

We have a thriving marketplace for technology innovation, and this year’s Thames Valley Chambers of Commerce International Technology Conference, held recently at Microsoft’s UK head office in Reading, showcased yet more of the pioneering activity going on in our region.

Aside from the business opportunities, Reading is a great place for our people to collaborate and support each other within the professional community. Being surrounded by a multitude of great businesses, and networks of professional services, lawyers and banks – particularly for young professionals – there is not only optimum opportunities for our people, but also for us to have access to a wealth of strong talent.

Jim Rogers, practice leader for the Thames Valley and Southampton says “With so much opportunity for businesses, growth and home grown talent, it’s a pleasure to be a part of such an exciting and thriving community. Reading is at the heart of the Thames Valley, and we look forward to continuing our growth here for many years to come.”
