A brief history

Halsams was established in 1838 by brothers Charles and James. In the 1890s a son, Dryland joined the business and it became Haslam and Son until 1896 when it became Haslams Chartered Surveyors. Dryland’s brother, an architect, designed 156 Friar Street which was built for Estate Agency and Surveyors on the ground floor. In 1981 Haslams Chartered Surveyors purchased 155 Friar Street and was sold in 1995 to the newly formed Haslams Estate Agents Limited.

In 2007 Haslams moved from 156 Friar Street to new premises across the road to no. 17 Friar Street. The most recent move was in 2015 when Haslams moved to the newly renovated office at 159 Friar Street. What was formerly the Reading Gas Company with lamp shades hanging from the ceilings is now a sleek, edgy office with reclaimed whiskey barrel walls and exposed brick work that most wouldn’t even recognise as being an estate agents. Haslams is a born and bred Reading business with a long history and a strong partnership with the town that will continue to grow.

Why Reading?

Haslams has and will only ever operate in Reading and there are plenty of reasons why they have never left:

  • It is an exciting, ambitious and growing town.
  • High quality of life where investment potential is ripe and the outlook for the property market and local economy is extremely positive.
  • Great connectivity. Reading residents are well connected to the whole of the UK, with a 25min train to London Paddington, a 40min drive to Heathrow, easy access to the M4 and Crossrail coming soon you can go anywhere!
  • Bigger and better homes that are close to London. Their properties are typically cheaper than those in London but have bigger spaces and are set in a more rural location, perfect for growing families.
  • Reading is home. Their team knows Reading like the back of their hand, many have grown up in or close to Reading. They're your local on experts on where to go and what to do.
  • A vibrant town. Reading is jam packed with entertainment, restaurants and bars that appeal to everyone from young couples to families. You’re never far away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town centre.

"Reading and our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Personal recommendations are important to us, so we put a great deal of effort into maintaining and continually improving our service standards.” Steve Woodford –Managing Director
