Could you get involved in the 25th anniversary of Heritage Open Days?

13-22 September - any day or every day!

25Anniversary Colour 2000pxCould you do something for Heritage Open Days 2019? Registration is open for events as part of the 25th anniversary of England’s biggest heritage festival and Reading UK is encouraging people in Reading to get involved and showcase Reading’s heritage.

Could you organise an event to showcase a part of Reading’s heritage? A tour, a history walk, a talk, a play, opening up a historic building, a bike ride, cooking the food of your ancestors, a history pub quiz… the options are endless as long as your heritage event is FREE to the public.

Reading’s annual celebration of its heritage takes place between 13-22 September as part of England’s biggest heritage festival. This once-a year opportunity allows people to discover Reading’s hidden and forgotten treasures with all the heritage buildings FREE to explore. Reading UK produces a map guide featuring the independently organised events in Reading. This year’s national theme is People Power.

The history and heritage of Reading and its peoples is rich and diverse, from being a major medieval city to an industrial powerhouse and today as a modern day defacto city with a truly multicultural population.

Heritage Open Days is an opportunity for communities to tell their proud stories, to open up our historic buildings and to engage the next generation in our heritage. Reading UK would like to encourage Reading’s communities to get involved and showcase our stories.

In previous years, event examples have included:- faith communities have put events on in their churches, civic trusts have organised walking tours of Reading’s conservation areas, businesses have offered public access to the historic buildings in which they work. Reading has told the stories of Jane Austen and King Henry I, encouraged interest in family history, offered tours of historic gardens, told the story of our public art and architecture, and much more.

Anyone interested in getting involved in organising their own event can find out more at www.heritageopendays.org.uk Registration of event is open until 1 August.
