Rediscovering Reading - town centre reopens

Public support reopening of Reading town centre… safely

Non-essential retail and outdoor dining have reopened today in Reading town centre, following months of lockdown, with Reading people coming out to support their local businesses and enjoying the good weather safely.

  • Outdoor pub and dining options very popular, from Carluccio’s to the Reading Room secret courtyard or Oracle Riverside
  • Premier stories such as John Lewis and Primark are open again with queueing systems working well
  • Many of Reading’s vibrant independent sector, from SHED Café to Jacobs the Jeweller are open again.
  • In Reading’s two town centre shopping malls, Broad Street Mall and The Oracle, non-essential retail has reopened
  • Town centre gyms such as Buzz Gym are open
  • People visiting responsibly with masks and respecting social distancing.

Adam Jacobs, Chair Reading UK, said: “It is heartening to see Reading town centre open and customers returning, rediscovering and supporting our local businesses. Thank you to you everyone for your support, to those retail staff who have worked throughout the pandemic and to everyone who has helped get the town open again.

“Many of our cafes, pubs and restaurants are open for takeaway and are using their outdoor spaces creatively until they are allowed to open fully from 17 May so please lend them your support and do remember to visit safely, keeping to the guidelines of Face. Hands. Space. Fresh Air.”

Many outdoor visitor attractions have also opened in line with Government guidelines such as Beale Wildlife Park, Thames River Cruise, Thames Lido and Caversham Lakes.
