Reading's Twilight Trail comes to a close

Due to the latest government Tier 4 Stay at Home restrictions for Berkshire, Reading UK and Reading Borough Council have unfortunately decided to cancel the Twilight Trail, with the safety of staff, ticket holders and the wider community our number one priority.

The light and sound installation opened in Forbury Gardens and the Abbey Ruins on 8 December and has seen over 7,000 socially distanced visitors over the last fortnight. In addition, the Trail has raised money for local charities via its Zoom calls with Santa and Snow Princesses, as well as welcoming vulnerable groups for free visits.

Everyone who had booked from 20 December to the planned end date of 3 January has been informed and will be automatically refunded between now and 29 January.

Reading Place of Culture lead at Reading UK, Zsuzsi Lindsay said: “We know 2020 has been a difficult year for many, so at a time when artists and freelancers across the country are struggling, we are proud to have been able to run this event alongside some of our incredible local organisations and artists. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who bought a ticket for your support. We are so sorry for those who were not able to join us, but the wonderful feedback from those who did has been so appreciated by the whole team.”

Cllr Karen Rowland, Lead Member for Culture Heritage and Recreation at Reading Borough Council, said, “It is deeply disappointing that the Twilight Trail will not be able to continue as we’ve moved into Tier 4 restrictions over the weekend. The amount of joy it brought to so many, in what has been an otherwise subdued season, has been tremendous and something that few other towns offered. I’m so proud of the ‘above and beyond’ level of hard work and dedication by officers and staff at both Reading UK and Reading Borough Council to create something that was so location-appropriate, safe and fun for so many. Once again, the cultural and creative sector in Reading proved that no wall was too high in finding a way around to generate enjoyment and entertainment to our town. My deepest thanks to everyone involved in making our Twilight Trail a success.”
